About this rug

The central floral medallion of this lovely rug holds a dense cluster of leaves and petals. Charming vines and small blossoms in steel blue and teal cover the camel field, gathering around a central floral medallion. The medallion holds a dense cluster of leaves and petals in soft blue tones. Splendid scrolling corner pieces fill the four corners with curling vines that mirror the center. A wide steel blue border carries cream rosettes and floral forms within a scrolling frame. Worn streaks cross the field, and pale lines show where the foundation appears. Blue and teal notes rest against the warm ground. At 5'5" by 8'11", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

The carpets of Kula, in Manisa province, first appear in the 17th century, and the town made its best pieces in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the workshops of Gordes, a Manisa town, were particularly active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Manisa sits inland from the Aegean coast, and its weavers worked between two traditions. A single rug can hold the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops. These pieces were made for houses, not for export, so the sizes are practical and the drawing is unfussy. This rug keeps that unfussy drawing, with the floral medallion and corner scrolls set clearly on the open ground. The steel blue border frames the camel field with a continuous ring of blossoms.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
