About this rug

This lovely rug scatters loose flower sprays in dusty rose and brown across a pale green field. At the center, a geometric fret medallion sits on a pale green field scattered with loose flower sprays in dusty rose and brown. The round medallion holds a squared key pattern at its core, framed by curling vines and small petals. Graceful trailing floral sprays in dusty rose reach in from the four corners toward the middle. A splendid cream border carries a vine scroll with teal leaves and brown blossoms around the perimeter. Narrow guard stripes in dusty rose and blue edge the border on both sides. The pile is worn low across much of the field, and the weave shows through in open areas. The soft green and rose keep the drawing gentle in a sitting area. At 6'2" by 9'5", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Merchants of 1917 had a name for the most successful Turkish version of the Persian Tabriz carpet: “Isparta quality,” after the place where it was made. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This piece keeps that orderly floral layout in its scattered sprays and vine scroll border. The squared fret at the medallion’s core adds a structured note to the soft curves around it.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
