A tall brown tower rises from a wide base on this lovely rug. Over a cream field, a tall brown tower rises from a wide base detailed with grid windows and small green accents. There is no central medallion, only this single architectural form set against the open ground. The border carries a row of small rosettes in orange, sage, gray and red, set between narrow red guard stripes. A few patches across the field have worn low. Near a door, the brown drawing stays gentle against the light ground. At 2'2" by 2'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. Here the cream field holds a single pictorial tower. The brown structure fills the center simply, framed by the colorful rosette border.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
