Two large hexagonal medallions stacked down the length make this an amazing rug. Deep red covers much of the field in two large hexagonal medallions stacked down the length, each with a violet-blue diamond core amid small rosettes and house-shaped figures. A near-black burgundy ground fills the field between the medallions and beyond them. Handsome stepped red spandrels close both ends. The wide burgundy border holds hooked figures in navy and red, and brown hexagonal panels with a small red star at the center. Narrow guard stripes of small triangles in tan and navy run along each edge. The pile holds the same red strength from end to end. The deep red and dark ground suit a long space, and the burgundy border keeps them warm. At 4'5" by 10'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Zanjan rugs
The Mausoleum of Oljaytu, in the province of Zanjan, carries a 50-meter dome covered in turquoise-blue faience, the earliest double-shelled dome surviving in Persia. Zanjan lies on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weavers borrowed from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long, so many Zanjan pieces are runners. This one follows both: two angular medallions stack down a narrow length, and the small figures around them are built from straight lines. The ground is where it differs. Near-black burgundy fills a large part of the field around the red, so the piece looks darker than the red alone would suggest. Zanjan pieces are working rugs rather than showpieces.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
