About this rug

A large pointed hexagonal medallion dominates the center of this charming rug. Set in a rust field, small geometric motifs in blue, pink and dark teal fill the open ground. A large pointed hexagonal medallion dominates the center, with an indigo panel holding a small cream diamond, capped at the top and bottom by near-black ends crowded with tiny motifs. The corners of the field carry the same small shapes. A handsome blue main border carries rust rosettes and zigzag forms, set between narrow guard stripes in rust and cream. The pile is low and flat across the whole face, so the small drawing reads sharp. It brings a strong graphic line to a narrow space, balancing the warm rust against the cool blue panel. At 4'2" by 9'6", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Zanjan rugs

Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. In northwestern Persia, on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan, Zanjan has a village weaving that borrows from both. Geometric designs and long formats are the norm, which is why so many Zanjan pieces are runners. They are working rugs rather than showpieces. This rug keeps that geometric character, with stepped outlines and small angular motifs filling every space. Rather than a long runner shape, this rug places a single large pointed hexagon medallion of indigo and near-black in the rust field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
