Rows of rosettes and curved leaves repeat on this charming rug. Over a navy field, rows of rosettes and curved leaves repeat in rust, camel and teal. The all-over plan has no central medallion, and small flower heads space out evenly across the navy ground. A splendid deep red main border carries lovely scrolling vines and blossoms in camel and steel blue. Narrow guard stripes with a zigzag line in camel and black edge the border on both sides. The pile is low in places, and white specks show through the thinner weave. A narrow passage suits this runner, where the rust tones warm up the navy. At 3'1" by 7'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
Mahal is a trade name and not a town: it covers village carpets from the neighborhood of Arak. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Arak, then called Sultanabad, weaving rugs for its market. Woven in the villages around Arak in central Persia, Mahal rugs were large and open from the start. They have a wide field and generous spacing between the motifs. This runner keeps that spacing, with the rosettes set well apart across the length. Rust and camel accents repeat at even intervals over the navy ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
