A large hexagonal medallion holds stepped motifs on the near-black ground of this delightful rug. Set within a near-black field, a large hexagonal medallion holds stepped motifs in deep red, orange and gray. The central figure carries a small cream core inside its geometric frame. A beautiful burgundy border runs small cream diamonds and hooked lines around the rug. Wide end panels in orange and red hold rows of small boxed figures at the top and bottom. The pile is full across the face and in every border. In a tight spot, the bright orange and red stand out against the near-black ground. At 1'8" by 2'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Ardabil rugs
The Ardabil Carpet in London, made for the shrine of the Safavid shahs at Ardabil, carries the year 946 in its inscription, equivalent to 1539-40. After an earthquake damaged the shrine it was sold to a Manchester firm, and the Victoria and Albert Museum bought it in 1893. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, near the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric, with stepped medallions, hooked borders and strong contrast. This piece keeps that strict geometry, centering a single bold hexagon instead of a repeating pattern. The deep red and orange tones glow brightly against the near-black ground, creating a sharp visual focus. Its compact size gathers the bold drawing into one small, dense block of color and line.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
