A column of hexagonal medallions runs through this remarkable rug. On a navy field, rows of small rust and cream geometric figures fill the space around two large central shapes. A column of hexagonal medallions runs down the center, each holding a red cross form and small teal accents within a stepped outline in slate blue. A small cream rosette sits in the open space between the two main figures. The main border is cream, carrying delicate abstract leaf forms in rust, olive and blue, framed by thin guard stripes in dark brown and red. Full pile covers the rug from edge to edge. It holds a strong graphic presence, with the bright red centers standing out against the navy ground. At 2' by 2'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

About Gharajeh rugs
The best-known pattern of Gharajeh is three geometric medallions, the central one with a latch-hooked outline in a different color and the other two eight-pointed stars. Britannica says the runners of Gharajeh resemble those of Karabagh in the Caucasus but look more Persian. Gharajeh, also spelled Karaja, is a village district in northwestern Persia, north of Heriz. Its signature is a column of separate medallions down a narrow field, each a different shape, rather than a single centered one. That layout suits long formats, and runners are the pieces the district is known for. This rug keeps that vertical arrangement, placing two large hexagons one above the other. The bold geometric drawing and the contrast of red on a navy ground match the village style seen in the region’s longer weavings.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
