A central vase of flowers makes this a delightful rug. Lovely vines and blossoms in muted pink, cream and steel blue fill the navy field around a central vase of flowers. The bouquet rises from a beige urn, with no medallion to break the open ground. A beautiful burgundy main border carries a scroll of small rosettes and leaves, edged by a camel band and narrow cream stripes. The pile is full from the center out to the edges. Soft pinks and blues float against the deep navy ground. At 1'10" by 2'4", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kerman rugs
Nadir Shah took many of Kerman’s most skilled weavers north after 1739 and the city was pillaged in 1794, yet its rug industry continued to prosper. In the Persian rug trade the carpets of Kerman rank first, ahead of the rugs of Hamedan. Kerman in southeastern Persia worked in the softest palette of the major Persian centers: powder blue, ivory, rose and pale green, often on a pale ground. The drawing is curvilinear and open, with more space left empty than a Kashan or a Tabriz would allow. This rug keeps that open drawing in the single vase of flowers set against the wide navy ground. The muted pink and steel blue blossoms hold their soft colors against the navy field.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
