This delightful rug has a blue vase of blossoms on a navy field. At the center, a blue vase holds a spray of deep red and cream blossoms on a navy field. The bouquet spreads wide with charming curling vines, gold leaves and small rosettes in ochre and steel blue. Small flower sprigs sit in the four corners, set directly against the navy ground without a framing border. Full pile covers the face and the drawing stays sharp. The bright flowers stand out sharply against the navy ground. At 2'7" by 1'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
Under the Safavid shahs Kashan was an important center of the silk trade and of carpet making. Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Old Kashans are known for saturated madder reds. These were made as the best rug in a house, and the drawing carries that intent. This piece keeps the curling vine and the red notes, but it gathers them into a single vase design instead of a medallion layout. The navy ground lets the red and gold flowers stand out.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
