Small boteh in rust, salmon and camel repeat from end to end across this lovely rug. Set within a navy field, rows of small boteh in rust, salmon and camel repeat from end to end. The dainty paisley leaf-drop shapes sit in a tight diagonal lattice of near-black lines, with teal touches at their edges. No medallion interrupts the pattern, which runs to the edge without a border. A few patches have worn low, and tiny flecks of foundation show in the navy. The dense drawing carries rust and camel across the navy along the whole length. At 2' by 9'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Botteh rugs
The shawls of the Scottish town of Paisley were so prominent on the market that the boteh has been called the paisley ever since. The Jacquard loom, invented in 1801, was first used in Paisley in the 1820s and made shawls in the boteh pattern cheaper to weave. Botteh is a motif, not a place: the teardrop with the bent tip that Europe later borrowed and called paisley. Rugs cataloged this way carry the boteh as their organizing figure, repeated in rows across the field. The motif turns up from the tribal south to the city workshops of the center. This runner repeats the figure in a diagonal grid down its whole length. The rust, salmon and camel boteh stand out against the navy ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
