About this rug

Three ivory medallions framed in black hooks make this a charming rug. Across a deep red field, three stepped ivory medallions framed by black hooks run down the center. The two at the ends hold a red cross figure with a black center, and the larger middle one holds a column of gray-blue and teal diamonds. The red ground carries scattered geometric motifs in black and ivory between these central forms. Stepped gray-blue pieces fill the corners at each end, with small teal stars beside the medallions. A beautiful main border of ivory carries abstract geometric figures in red, black and teal, flanked by narrow guard stripes of teal with small red triangles and thin black lines. The pile is worn across much of the red field, and the foundation shows through in patches. The dense drawing holds the eye with its sharp contrast of ivory against the deep red ground. At 3'5" by 10'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Vist rugs

Vist is a village in the Isfahan region, southwest of Khansar and close to Golpayegan. The weaving families of Vist came as nomads from villages around Hamedan, centuries ago. Vist designs passed from mother to child, generation after generation. Vist rugs share straightforward geometry. This runner keeps that directness in its stacked medallions and the bold black outlines around them. The teal in the border and the small stars beside the medallions adds a cool note to the red and ivory palette.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
