About this rug

Delightful diamonds in navy, steel blue and rust form a tight grid over a straw field. Over a straw field, a tight grid of diamonds in navy, steel blue and rust repeats across the open ground. The pattern runs edge to edge with no central figure to break the rhythm. A gorgeous red main border carries steel blue crosses and diamonds dotted in navy, between cream bands of small cartouches. Zigzag stripes in tan and steel blue run on either side. Full pile stands in the field and each border stripe. In a bright room, the straw ground lifts the red border. At 6'11" by 9'11", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Yazd rugs

Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, set Yazd in the center of a sandy plain, midway between Kerman and Kashan. He found almost the last of the fire-worshippers of Persia still following the ancient faith there. Yazd sits on the edge of the central Persian desert and has been a textile city for centuries. Weavers there borrowed the medallion and vine drawing of Kerman to the south and worked it in a slightly cooler palette. This rug has that cooler palette, with navy and steel blue set against the warm straw ground. The drawing is firmly geometric, filling the field with a tight diamond grid.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
