About this rug

A central star medallion with a cream core makes this a lovely rug. Delicate pale blue vines and flower heads spread across a salmon field from a central star medallion. Its cream core holds a small teal star, while scrolling stems reach toward the edges. Large spiral scrolls in teal and powder blue fill the four corners, framing the open center. A wide powder blue border holds stepped geometric motifs in slate blue and cream between narrow guard stripes of small dark marks. The pile has worn low over most of the rug, and the weave is visible. The remaining drawing keeps the warm salmon and cool blue notes in balance. At 5'6" by 9'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the workshops of Gordes, a Manisa town, were particularly active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Manisa lies inland from the Aegean coast, and its weaving sits between two traditions. You find the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops in the same rug. This piece carries that mix in a star shape at the center and scrolling stems across the field. Its powder blue sets a cool note against the salmon ground, unlike the warm, faded look often seen in Manisa rugs. Manisa pieces were made for houses rather than for export, which is why the sizes are practical and the drawing is unfussy.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
