Scattered boteh and fine vines in gray brown and teal fill this charming rug. The cream field holds scattered boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, and fine vines in gray brown and teal. A handsome lobed teal medallion rests in the middle, its heart a small cream star surrounded by dainty floral sprays. Gray spandrels sit in each corner, with fine brown floral work. The main border is teal, patterned with cream rosettes and scrolling leaves in gray brown. Narrow guard stripes of cream and gray brown frame the wide band on both sides. The pile is low in places across the border and field, where the weave shows. The soft teal and warm cream meet in even measure across the rug. At 6'5" by 10', it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
In 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, entrepreneurs of Isparta backed the founding of the Isparta Yarn Factory. In 1943 the Isparta carpet factory passed to the state-owned Sumerbank, which backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This piece keeps that orderly layout, with boteh and vines set in balanced rows around the medallion. A teal medallion and border frame the cream field.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
