About this rug

Large curled paisley scrolls in ivory and pale green fill this charming rug. A pale gray blue ground carries rows of large curled paisley scrolls in ivory and pale green, outlined in dark gray green. The pattern repeats across the whole surface, with no single motif to anchor the eye. A cream border carries a scatter of small blossoms in brown and muted pink, with a pale teal band along its inner edge and a dark guard stripe outside it. The colors are pale and even from washing, though every line of the drawing is still clear. The pile is short and level. The pale greens warm the light ground in a bright room. At 5'6" by 10', it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the workshops of Gordes, a Manisa town, were particularly active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Manisa lies inland from the Aegean coast, and its weaving sits between two traditions. You find the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops in the same rug. The palette leans warm and faded: cream, dusty rose, muted greens. Manisa pieces were made for houses rather than for export, which is why the sizes are practical and the drawing is unfussy. This rug keeps that unfussy drawing in its even rows of curled scrolls. With no focal point at the center, the repeat carries the whole surface.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
