About this rug

A column of cross-shaped medallions runs down the length of this lovely runner. Worked on a smoke gray field, stepped geometric forms repeat down the length in dark brown lines. A column of splendid cross-shaped medallions runs down the center, each holding small accents of muted pink and pale blue. Smaller diamond shapes flank the central axis and fill the ends, echoing the stepped outlines. The main border band reads gray brown and carries a tight geometric pattern around the edge. The pile is low in places along the runner, most clearly toward one end, where the field turns paler. The pink and blue notes stay subdued against the smoke gray ground in a long passage. At 3'6" by 10'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. Older Baluch rugs are typically dark, in reds, browns and blues with touches of white, and many have long striped aprons at both ends. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. This runner keeps that repetition in its column of stepped medallions and diamond shapes. The palette is muted, with the muted pink and pale blue softened against the smoke gray ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
