A central hexagon medallion in steel blue holds a diamond core on this charming rug. Small brown geometric motifs and rosettes scatter across the cream field. A central hexagon medallion in steel blue holds a diamond core and stepped edges. Handsome blue spandrels with bold brown shapes sit at the corners of the field. The main border is smoke gray, carrying brown scrolled forms along the edge. Narrow cream and brown stripes frame the band. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. Cool blue and warm brown meet on this ground. At 3'3" by 5'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Zanjan rugs
Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Its 50-meter dome, covered in turquoise-blue faience, is the earliest double-shelled dome surviving in Persia. In northwestern Persia, on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan, Zanjan has a village weaving that borrows from both. Geometric designs and long formats are common here. They are working rugs rather than showpieces. This rug keeps the geometric drawing, with a stepped hexagon medallion and scattered motifs across the field. The steel blue and brown sit against the washed cream ground, keeping the pattern distinct.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
