About this rug

The wide beige main border with its soft brown zigzag makes this an amazing rug. Three handsome octagonal brown medallions step down a beige field in a single column, each filled with cream hooks around a small core with a rust red star, reading coral. Stepped dark brown side pieces sit between them, and dainty star flowers in cream, brown and coral red fill the gaps along the center line. A row of three star flowers closes each end of the field. The wide beige main border carries a soft brown zigzag, with a guard stripe of cream zigzags on dark brown between it and the field. The pile is full along the whole length, and the beige deepens slightly toward one end. It brings a warm, low-key line into a narrow space, with beige and brown as the base and the coral red turning up as small accents. At 3'8" by 13'5", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Ardabil Carpet in London, made for the shrine of the Safavid shahs at Ardabil, carries the year 946 in its inscription, equivalent to 1539-40. Ardabil stands high in Persia’s northwest, close to the Azerbaijani border, and the weaving of the district is firmly geometric: stepped medallions, hooked borders, strong contrast. This runner follows that geometry closely. Its octagons are filled with hooked cream figures, and the stepped side pieces between them are the same kind of angular drawing. It departs in the border, a soft zigzag rather than a hooked line, and in colors held to beige and brown with a few coral red touches. Runners and long formats are common in Ardabil, and a single column of medallions suits the length.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
