About this rug

Four deep red hexagonal medallions sit on the cream ground of this lovely runner. A cream ground runs the length of this runner and carries four deep red hexagonal medallions, which make the whole rug read deep red. Each medallion holds small teal, rust and orange figures. Small stepped diamonds in black, rust and teal float in the cream spaces between them. The main border is dark red, carrying a chain of angular forms in orange, teal, cream and rose. Narrow guard stripes in black and tan frame the wide border on both sides. Small white flecks show over the cream ground and the border, and the pile is low in places, with the foundation showing in one border patch. The cream ground lightens the red, giving this runner a strong graphic line for a passage. At 3'3" by 13'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Azerbaijan rugs

The Shahsevan, Turkic nomads of the northwest, carry a name that means those who love the king. They spent the winter near sea level on the Moghan steppe and the summer about 160 kilometers south, in the high pastures of the Savalan range. Persian Azerbaijan is the northwestern corner of the country. It is less a single style than a family of village traditions with a shared vocabulary of angular medallions, hooked motifs, madder and indigo. The rugs were made for houses in a cold region, not for export catalogs. This runner keeps that vocabulary in its hooked hexagons and the strict geometry of the border. Rather than the darker grounds often seen in the region, this cream ground makes the red medallions stand out one after another down the hall.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
