About this rug

Stepped diamonds and zigzag lines in cream and dark blue cover this amazing runner. Stepped diamonds and zigzag lines cover the deep red field, worked in cream and dark blue. Two large hexagonal medallions with rust cores anchor the center, linked by smaller geometric lozenges. Gorgeous angular spandrels at the ends hold stylized motifs in cream and blue against the red ground. The main border is cream, carrying a graceful vine of small red flowers and geometric squares. Narrow guard stripes in dark blue and red frame this outer band. Full pile stands across the face, keeping the geometric lines sharp. The dense drawing holds the eye along the length, and the cream border lightens the heavy red. At 3'1" by 12'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The famous Ardabil Carpet has a twin, made for the same shrine at Ardabil and kept today in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, near the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric, with stepped medallions, hooked borders and strong contrast. Runners and other long formats are common. This piece keeps that strict geometry, with hard angles defining every shape. The strong contrast between the deep red field and the cream border follows the local tradition. The two large hexagons linked by a central column give the long format a clear spine.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
