About this rug

Scrolling vines carry palmettes and rosettes in pale blue, dark blue and camel across the cream field of this charming rug. Across a cream field, scrolling vines carry palmettes and rosettes in pale blue, dark blue and camel, with touches of wine red. A splendid rosette medallion sits at the center, its core a small brown flower in a cream frame, ringed by blue and tan petals. Dark blue spandrels close the four corners of the field. The main border is ivory, set with a chain of linked palmettes and curling leaves in blue and brown. Narrow guard stripes in tan and pale blue edge the border on both sides. The pile is low in a few small spots across the field. The pale field keeps the blue drawing light in a sitting area. At 6'4" by 9'10", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Nain rugs

Carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan in the second quarter of the 20th century and expanded rapidly, making carpets for the European market. By the middle of the 20th century Nain was producing carpets of the Isfahan kind in an extremely fine weave. Nain sits on the edge of the central desert, near Isfahan. Few Persian towns built their weaving reputation in the twentieth century rather than centuries earlier, and Nain is one of them. The palette is unusually pale for Persia, with ivory grounds, soft blue and closely worked vines. This rug keeps that pale ground and the soft blue drawing, with fine vine work across the field. The rosette medallion and the dark blue corners are the strongest notes in the layout.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
