About this rug

The cream quatrefoil inside the dark brown medallion makes this a charming rug. Dainty scrolling vines and floral sprays in rose, camel and slate blue cover the deep red field. In the middle sits a dark brown medallion holding a rose diamond, and inside it a cream quatrefoil of four lobes circles a small red flower. Lobed pendants stretch toward the top and bottom. Splendid camel spandrels fill the four corners, scrolling with leaves and blossoms. The main border has a dark burgundy ground, carrying red and rose rosettes with small floral motifs, with a narrow guard stripe of cream and red on either side. Pale, scraped patches show in the upper right and the middle of the field, where the pile is low and the foundation shows. The red ground and camel corners hold the center of this warm rug. At 7'10" by 11'2", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Lilihan rugs

Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Lilihan is a village in the Arak district of central Persia, and its weaving is close kin to Sarouk. The field is floral, often on a rose or madder ground, and worked in curved lines rather than angles. This rug keeps that floral field and the curved drawing, with vines and blossoms filling the red ground around a dark medallion. Camel corner pieces sit against the red, and the border carries rosettes in red and rose.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
