About this rug

This charming rug has scrolling vines and small flowers running across its whole pink field. At the center, a small round rosette sits among lovely scrolling vines and small flowers on a pink field. There is no large medallion, and the vines run across the whole field. Thin near-black guard lines frame the field, inside a wider border in deeper pink with small flowers and a vine. The rug looks overdyed, one strong pink with the pattern left as dark plum outline. Wide pale bands of low pile cross the field, where the pink reads lighter and the foundation shows. The strong pink stays vivid against pale walls in a bright room. At 6'6" by 10', it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

Since 1850 carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages, and it was the Oriental Carpet Company that first carried its carpets overseas. Under the name “Isparta quality” the carpets of Isparta were famous in the early years of the Turkish Republic. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly. This piece keeps a framed layout, with a wide border and thin guard lines around a field of vines. The pink field is saturated and lightens in bands where the pile is low.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
