About this rug

A navy star medallion sends points into the rose red ground of this charming rug. Worked on a rose red field, scrolling vines and small blossoms in cream and pale blue fill the space around a central figure. A navy star medallion with a cream rosette core sits at the center, sending points into the rose red ground. Gorgeous pale blue spandrels occupy the four corners, holding lovely pink sprays. The main border is navy, with a broad scroll of cream palmettes and pale blue leaves. Narrow guard stripes in cream with small pink flowers edge the wide band. The pile has thinned in a few patches across the field, and the rose red reads paler where the wear is heaviest. It grounds a sitting area, the navy border containing the bright rose red field. At 7'8" by 11'5", it fits a dining table for four with the chairs pulled out, or a living room with the sofa and chairs fully on it.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mashhad rugs

Under the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries Khorasan, the province of Mashhad, also took in the cities of Merv and Herat. Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. Mashhad is the great weaving city of Khorasan in northeastern Persia, and it specialized in large formats. Its rugs show a single dominant medallion and borders wide enough to hold their own at scale. This rug has that single medallion, a navy star, and a wide navy border. The rose red field is filled with small blossoms and light vines.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
