About this rug

The small dark brown rosettes and blue hooked figures give this runner a charming steady rhythm. The sage field reads green-gray from a distance, and up close it is a tan ground worked with a pale green lattice, small dark brown rosettes and blue hooked figures. No central medallion anchors the design, only the steady rhythm of these motifs running the length of the runner. The main border is tan, carrying angular dark brown vines with small blue and green accents. Thin guard stripes in dark brown, blue and green frame this wide band on both sides. The pile is low across the face, and the foundation shows through in places across the field. Muted green and tan tones give this runner an earthy feel in a passage. At 3'9" by 16'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Borujerd rugs

Borujerd lies in Lorestan, the home of the Luristan Bronzes, which date from the turbulent years of about 700 to 625 BCE. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, found most people of Borujerd farming, and only a small part weaving, encouraged by the prices of the Sultanabad rug trade. Borujerd sits in the Zagros foothills of western Persia, in Lorestan, and the weaving carries both village and tribal character. The drawing is geometric and a little loose, and the colors come from the same madder and indigo the whole region used. This runner keeps that loose geometry in its scattered diamonds, rosettes and hooked shapes. Its border holds the same angular vocabulary, wrapping the long field in brown vine with blue and green detail.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
