About this rug

A chain of small lobed medallions in dark teal runs down the center of this lovely rug. A full antique wash, no color left at strength, has brought the cream field and its sage green drawing to one warm level. Vines, sprays and small blossoms in sage and brown cover the field, and a chain of small lobed medallions in dark teal runs down the center. A zigzag guard line and narrow olive stripes edge the field on every side. The main border reads olive, its dark ground carrying cream flower heads, small four-petal blossoms and curling leaves. The pile is worn low across the face, lowest in the field. The sage and cream tones stay muted in a bright passage. At 3'9" by 17'5", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Several generations ago many rugs from the villages around Hamedan were traded through Mosul, and so were known as Mosul rugs. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, noted that old Hamedan runners sometimes ran twenty feet or more in length. Hamedan is a weaving district of western Persia. Its long narrow runners were built for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from there. This one stretches the format a long way. Its allover floral field carries a chain of small medallions, so the length breaks into stages as you walk it. Cream and sage cover all that distance, while the olive border holds the edges in place.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
