About this rug

Across the dark blue field, small rosettes and angular leaves form a lovely dense repeating lattice. Small rosettes and angular leaves in cream, tan and pale blue cover the dark blue field in a dense repeating lattice. No single shape anchors the center, and the field shifts from slate blue to near-black along its length, with a rose-brown patch at one end. The main border is tan, carrying charming brown and cream leaves with small flowers in brown and pale blue. A brown guard stripe with small cream motifs runs inside it, and a gray-blue stripe edges the outside. Scattered pale specks across the face mark places where the pile is thin. A light antique wash has softened the colors without reaching the drawing. The blue ground cools the warm tan frame, stretching in a long line down a hall. At 3'11" by 16'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Malayer rugs

Rugs from the villages around Hamedan were taken to the city, long one of the great rug markets of Persia, and were often sold abroad under its name. Several generations ago many of these rugs were traded through Mosul, and so were known as Mosul rugs. Malayer sits between Hamedan and Arak in western Persia, which is exactly where its weaving sits too. It joins the village tradition of Hamedan with the floral drawing of the Arak district. This runner keeps that mix, with the tight geometric lattice of the village set against soft flower heads. The blue ground runs the full length, holding the cream and tan motifs in a steady rhythm.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
