About this rug

The terracotta field holds a charming lobed medallion with a teal center. Worked on a terracotta field, faint vine scrolls and small teal leaves drift across the open ground. A lobed central medallion carries pendants at the top and bottom, with its center picked out in teal. Pale corner pieces with scrolled edges sit at the four corners of the field, holding traces of the same vine. The main border is light brown, carrying a chain of graceful leafy palmettes in tan and olive. Narrow guard stripes with a fine small pattern edge this band on both sides. A few low patches in the pile show the foundation pale. A full antique wash, no color left at strength, has left the whole face at one warm level. The warm terracotta and teal sit lightly together across the surface. At 6'3" by 9'6", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Tabriz rugs

From the middle of the 1800s commercial carpet weaving revived in Persia, and Tabriz was one of its most important centers, weaving largely for Europe. Its weavers tie their knots with a small hooked knife instead of their fingers, and have been timed at faster than one knot a second. The city workshop tradition of Tabriz, in northwestern Persia, shows in the discipline of the drawing. Centered medallions, borders that turn cleanly at the corners and vine scrolls planned in full before weaving began are the marks of Tabriz work. This rug keeps that centered medallion and a vine scroll laid out around it. The teal leaves and tan scrolls sit close in tone across the field. Tabriz workshops also used a wider palette than most, so ivory, gray beige and pale blue grounds appear alongside the reds.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
