The pictorial scene of this delightful rug fills the deep red ground. Worked on a deep red field, two figures stand close together beneath lovely flowering branches and birds. One has long brown hair and an olive garment, the other wears a blue turban, and a pretty garland of pink flowers curves at their feet. There is no central medallion or corner spandrels; the pictorial scene fills the entire ground. The main border is violet, set with a small repeating floral pattern and a thin guard stripe on each side. The pile is full over the face, keeping the outlines crisp. The saturated red and olive bring warmth to the room. At 2'1" by 2'2", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kashan rugs
Only about twenty of the silk carpets of the 1500s credited to Kashan are known to survive, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art owns four of them. Their animal designs match those in royal manuscripts and book bindings, all of them born in the Safavid court design workshop. Kashan is the central Persian city most associated with the formal Persian rug: a central medallion, spandrels in the corners, and a field of curling vine and palmette. Old Kashans are known for saturated madder reds. This piece keeps that saturated red ground and the fine drawing, but replaces the formal layout with a pictorial scene. The figures and flowering trees fill the field completely, leaving no room for a medallion or corner pieces.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
