Two figures face one another amid flowering vines on this amazing rug. The deep red field holds a pictorial scene of two figures facing one another amid delicate flowering vines, branches, birds and leaves. Gold and steel blue robes define the couple, while a garland of small flowers and rosettes curves below them. A beautiful navy main border carries a repeating scroll of small rosettes in gold and red. The pile is full across the face and through the pictorial drawing. It brings a warm focal point to a small space, balancing the bold red with cool blue accents. At 2'7" by 2', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Sarouk rugs
Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. A hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad wove rugs for its market, by the count of Walter Hawley, writing in 1913. Sarouk sits in the Arak district of central Persia, and its rugs are known for floral fields worked in curves. This rug keeps that curved floral work in the branches surrounding the figures. Instead of an abstract lattice, the design centers on a narrative scene framed by blossoming vines.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
