A column of geometric medallions runs down this charming rug. A faded red field displays a column of geometric medallions in dark brown, teal and cream. Two large hexagons with cream outlines hold dark brown cores, and smaller teal medallions sit between and beyond them. Small motifs scatter across the red ground around these central figures. A beautiful navy border carries rows of small geometric shapes in rust, cream and blue. The pile is low in places, and white specks mark spots where the foundation appears through the weave. It anchors the rich red and the cool teal notes in a narrow passage. At 2' by 5'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Gharajeh rugs
The best-known pattern of Gharajeh is three geometric medallions, the central one with a latch-hooked outline in a different color and the other two eight-pointed stars. Britannica says the runners of Gharajeh resemble those of Karabagh in the Caucasus but look more Persian. Gharajeh, also written Karaja, is a village district north of Heriz in northwestern Persia. Its signature is a column of separate medallions running down a narrow field, each one a different shape, rather than a single centered one. That layout suits long formats, and the district is known for its long pieces. This rug keeps that column of distinct medallions, stacked down the length. The dark brown cores sit inside cream outlines against the red ground, and the navy border frames the geometric drawing.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
