About this rug

A lattice of hexagonal cells over a terracotta ground makes this a charming runner. This runner is built on a lattice of hexagonal cells that runs its full length over a terracotta ground. Most cells hold a dainty flowering plant in navy or in pale rose. The ground turns camel brown toward the ends, with bands of rose through the middle. There are no corner pieces; small stepped figures close each end. Its border is a handsome muted pink band of brown sawtooth stripes and small rosettes, set between thin brown and navy guard lines. The pile is worn low from end to end. Navy plants repeat along this long band of warm color, giving the runner a steady rhythm. At 3'11" by 12'6", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Shiraz rugs

Shiraz was the capital of Persia from 1760 to 1779, in the reign of Karim Khan. The Qashqai tribal confederacy was formed in the late 18th century, during or just after the rule of Karim Khan Zand in Shiraz. Shiraz is the market city of Fars province in southern Persia. Rugs sold under its name were woven by the tribal and village weavers of the surrounding country. The drawing is geometric and often asymmetric, and no two are laid out quite the same way. This runner is geometric in every line, from the hexagonal cells to the sawtooth border. The plants change color from row to row, and the ground shifts from camel to rose, so each row looks a little different.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
