About this rug

The broad octagonal medallion makes this a charming rug. Over a tan field, a broad octagonal medallion holds a ring of small geometric rosettes around a central cross, with stepped pendants stacked above and below it. Tiny sprigs and hooked motifs in dark brown and cream are scattered over the surrounding ground. Handsome teal and tan corner pieces with stepped edges fill the four corners. The gorgeous main border runs dark brown, carrying bold angular shapes in cream, teal and camel. Rows of small camel and cream lozenges frame the border band on both sides. Low patches show in the field, and a light antique wash has softened the colors without reaching the drawing. It grounds a sitting area, where the teal accents cool the warm earth tones. At 6'8" by 9'9", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Bakhtiari rugs

The Bakhtiari are divided into two main groups, the Chahar Lang, or Four Legs, and the Haft Lang, or Seven Legs. In 1909 Bakhtiari tribesmen under the chief Sardar Assad captured Tehran in a successful campaign for constitutional reform. Bakhtiari weaving comes from the Zagros mountains of western Persia. Bakhtiari weavers moved their herds twice a year. This rug is built on a single medallion with stepped pendants, and its border carries angular shapes cut square, alternating cream and teal against the dark brown. The colors stay in tan and dark brown, with teal as the one clear color in the drawing.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
