A column of varied medallions fills this remarkable rug. The deep red field holds a column of varied medallions, stepped navy stars alternating with cream hexagons that have hooked edges and red cores. Small figures in teal, gold, pink and green fill the open ground between these central forms. The main border is dark indigo, carrying red and cream geometric motifs and small crosses, and a dotted cream and red guard stripe runs inside it. Full pile stands over the face, preserving the saturated red tone and the clear pattern. It holds a strong tribal rhythm in a narrow passage, and the bright accents stand out against the dark frame. At 3'4" by 9'5", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

About Gharajeh rugs
The best-known pattern of Gharajeh is three geometric medallions, the central one with a latch-hooked outline in a different color and the other two eight-pointed stars. Britannica says the runners of Gharajeh resemble those of Karabagh in the Caucasus but look more Persian. Gharajeh, also written Karaja, is a village district north of Heriz in northwestern Persia. Its signature is a column of separate medallions running down a narrow field, each one a different shape, rather than a single centered one. That layout suits long formats, and Gharajeh runners are the pieces the district is known for. This piece retains that vertical arrangement, alternating star shapes with hexagonal forms down the center. The dense scatter of small colored figures around the medallions adds a busy texture to the red ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
