Dark brown geometric emblems sit in a grid of square panels on this lovely runner. The burgundy field is laid out as a grid of square panels holding dark brown geometric emblems and small rosettes. There is no central medallion; the pattern repeats down the length in rows. No corner spandrels break the grid. A narrow border of small motifs runs along the edges. A few patches have worn to tiny white dots of foundation. Deep red and brown tones suit this runner for a narrow passage. At 2'7" by 8'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This runner keeps that deep warmth, with the brown drawing placed firmly on the burgundy ground. The grid of square panels carries the same emblem down the length, a steady repeat suited to a long, narrow floor.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
