About this rug

This charming rug holds a stepped star medallion in sage and cream. A stepped star medallion in sage and cream sits on a lavender field, with fine branching sprays reaching out around it. Small cream lozenges with cross-shaped centers sit above and below the star on the long axis. Handsome cream spandrels with stepped edges fill the four corners, holding small sprays and a few sage leaves. The gorgeous main border pairs faded red with cream, with palmettes and scrolling leaves picked out in brown and sage. Narrow guard stripes in dark brown and cream frame the border on both sides. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear, and the pile is full over the field. The lavender and sage notes stay gentle across the surface. At 5'10" by 10'1", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

The carpets of Kula, in Manisa province, first appear in the 17th century, and the town made its best pieces in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the workshops of Gordes, a Manisa town, were particularly active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Manisa lies inland from the Aegean coast, and its weaving sits between two traditions. You find the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops in the same rug. The star center and the angular sprays lean toward the village side, while the border carries the floral side. Manisa pieces were made for houses rather than for export, which is why the sizes are practical and the drawing is unfussy. The open field around the medallion gives the design room to breathe.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
