About this rug

Three linked medallions in deep red run down the indigo blue ground of this delightful rug. Three linked medallions in deep red run down an indigo blue ground, each ringed by a blue band of red hooks and edged with pink and cream sawtooth. The cores hold small lozenges in orange and salmon with navy crosses, among tiny rosettes and stylized plants. Stepped black pendants cap each end of the chain. The blue ground at the ends and sides holds red eight-point stars, boxed flowers and small animals. Dark blue forms the main border, with red zigzags and small diamonds, set between burgundy guard stripes. Up close, the pile is full everywhere, and the blue ground carries a few lighter patches. It grounds a long entry in deep red and indigo, and the pink sawtooth edges keep the dark colors lively. At 3'7" by 9'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Zanjan rugs

Soltaniyeh, in the province of Zanjan, was the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, and the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built there between 1302 and 1312. Its 50-meter dome, covered in turquoise-blue faience, is the earliest double-shelled dome surviving in Persia. Zanjan sits on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weaving borrows from both. Zanjan designs are geometric and its formats run long, so runners are common. This one shows it clearly: pointed medallions in a straight chain, red hooks around each, and zigzags in the borders. These are working rugs rather than showpieces, and this one has that direct character, with bold red and blue and shapes that read from the far end of a hall.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
