$500 to $1,000 Rugs
Our mid band is where a lot of buyers end up: a wide choice of sizes, mostly in sound condition, at a price that still feels sensible.

The size-and-condition sweet spot
This band sits at a useful crossroads in the collection: plenty of vintage carpets here are big enough to hold a whole seating group, and most are sound enough to live on for years. Almost half of the band is runners, so it is also the place to look for a long hall or stair piece in good condition. That mix is why so many people find their main rug, or their longest runner, right here.
Here you will find room-sized rugs, most of them 5x8 and larger, and a wide choice of long runners: sound wool, clear patterns and the mellow patina of forty to eighty years. About two thirds are Persian, the rest Turkish. If you’re hunting the main rug for a living room or bedroom, start your search right here.
What changes at this price
Within this band you get a wide choice of sizes, with most rugs in sound condition. Expect:
- Room-sized formats, solid mid-size area rugs, generous runners and the smaller end of large carpets.
- Even, healthy pile, low and hard-wearing, with less of the patchy wear that brings some rugs below $500.
- Clear, confident drawing, patterns that stay crisp and legible, softened by age but with no heavy loss.
You are paying for a rug that works at scale and keeps going: the everyday workhorse of the vintage world.
Sizing the main rug in a room
Because a rug in this band is usually destined to be the main event, measure before you shop rather than after. In a sitting room, the front legs of the sofa and chairs should rest on the rug; under a dining table, leave about 24 inches (60 cm) beyond the table so chairs slide back without catching an edge. A rug that stops just short of the furniture makes a whole room feel smaller, so err on the generous side. Our size guide walks through the common living- and dining-room layouts if you want exact figures before you commit.
How to choose within the band
Once size and condition check out, the decision comes down to character. A busy, high-contrast pattern hides the traffic of a family room and forgives the odd spill; a calmer, tonal weave lets other furnishings lead and feels more restful in a bedroom. Deep reds and burgundies lead the palette in this band, with creams and soft pinks close behind. Think about the palette already in the room and whether you want the rug to set it or support it. If nothing at this level is quite grand enough, the finer and larger pieces begin one step up; if you are furnishing several rooms at once, browsing the full collection across the bands can turn up a coherent set.
A rug built to be lived on
Vintage hand-knotted wool is made for exactly this job: durable, forgiving and only improved by use. A rug bought here should be a buy-once decision, so lay it on a rug pad of the right thickness for your floor, which stops it creeping on hard boards, cushions each footstep and takes the daily crush off the foundation. Turn it once or twice a year so wear and sunlight even out, vacuum weekly and blot any spill promptly rather than rubbing it in. A professional clean every few years keeps the pile bright. With that modest routine, a carpet from this band will comfortably outlast most of the furniture around it.
Common questions
Is this really the best band for a living-room rug?
For most homes, yes. It is the first point where you reliably get genuine room-sized dimensions together with condition that will hold up under daily traffic, precisely what a main rug has to do.
Why do two rugs the same size sit at different prices here?
Weave fineness, wool quality, origin and condition all pull on the number. A more finely knotted or better-preserved piece sits at the top of the band, while a slightly coarser or more worn rug of the same size sits lower. Both are honest; they are simply different rugs.
Each rug in this band is one of one, so when a size and pattern click for your room, it is worth acting before someone else’s room claims it first.
