$2,000 & Up

Rugs over $2, 000 are the finest and rarest carpets we handle, large, exceptional antiques for grand rooms and serious collectors. Pieces reach this level for the best reasons: remarkable scale, very fine knotting, superb wool and natural dyes, unusually good condition for their age, or the provenance of a celebrated workshop.

These are heirlooms, handed down rather than replaced. If you are looking for a carpet to keep for a lifetime, this is the shelf to study.

Rugs over $2,000: the finest and rarest pieces

Rugs over $2,000 are the top of everything we offer, the largest, finest and rarest antiques in the collection, and the ones we are most reluctant to see go. A carpet reaches this level only through a genuine combination of qualities: exceptional scale, very fine knotting, superb wool and dyes, remarkable condition for its age, or the provenance of a celebrated weaving center. More often than not, several of those at once.

What sets a rug at this level apart

These are objects of textile art as much as furnishings, and the difference shows in the making:

  • Exceptional scale, oversized carpets woven to fill grand rooms, representing years of work at the loom.
  • Masterful weaving, very high knot counts and assured, sophisticated drawing that only the best workshops achieved.
  • Superb materials, lustrous hand-spun wool and natural dyes that have aged into extraordinary depth of color.
  • Rare survival, fine condition in a large antique is uncommon, and grows scarcer every year.

Why they command what they do

Weaving a large, finely knotted carpet by hand was the labour of years, and the examples that have survived in fine condition are a shrinking population. Add sought-after provenance, a master-workshop Tabriz, a grand antique Sultanabad, a rare tribal piece with real age, and you have an object of genuine cultural and material worth, backed by a documented weaving tradition. At this level you are acquiring a piece of history, not merely a floor covering.

Heirlooms that tend to hold their value

Unlike almost anything else you furnish a room with, a fine antique carpet often holds or increases in value as the years pass. The best examples have appreciated steadily as genuine antiques of this quality become harder to source, so a well-chosen piece here is as much a store of value as a furnishing, while bringing a room a depth of color, craftsmanship and presence that reads instantly, and does so for generations.

Stewarding a carpet of this quality

Owning a rug at this level is a form of custodianship, though the care itself is straightforward. Always sit it on a proper underlay, turn it once or twice a year so wear and light stay even, and vacuum gently without a hard beater bar. Blot any spill the moment it happens, keep the carpet clear of harsh direct sun where you can, and entrust cleaning only to a specialist experienced with antique rugs. Treated this way, it will stay beautiful and valuable long after you.

Buying with guidance

A purchase of this size deserves a close look and a conversation. Every piece is photographed in detail so you can study the weave, the pile and the condition, and our team knows each carpet by hand and is glad to talk one through with you before you decide. If sheer size is part of what you are after, browse the oversized rugs alongside this band, and the wider Persian rugs collection sets these finest examples in their broader tradition. Collector questions

What actually pushes a rug past $2,000?

Rarely a single factor, usually scale and fineness and condition and provenance reinforcing one another. A large carpet that is also finely knotted, well preserved and from a respected workshop is a genuinely uncommon survivor, and the price reflects that scarcity.

Can you help me judge a piece before I commit?

Yes, that is exactly what we are here for. Tell us the room and what draws you to a rug, and we will talk through its weave, origin and condition honestly, so a decision of this size is made with full information rather than on impulse.

There is only ever one of each of these carpets, and at this level a comparable replacement may not surface for years. When a piece of this stature is right, it is the kind of decision you make once and never regret.
