Azerbaijan: bold tribal drawing from north west Iran
The Iranian province of Azerbaijan, in the far north west, produces some of the most graphically confident weaving in the country. Sitting between the Persian and Caucasian traditions, the rugs take from both: strong geometric medallions, latch hook borders, and colour used at full saturation.
These are village and tribal weavings in hand spun wool, made to be used, and they have the directness that comes with weaving from memory.
What to look for
- Drawing: bold geometric medallions, stepped and hooked forms, strong borders.
- Colour: deep madder, indigo, ivory and gold in high contrast.
- Wool: hand spun with good lustre; often visible abrash.
- Sizes: mostly small to mid, including good runners.
Where they work
These are character rugs. They suit a room that can take a strong floor: a study, a hallway, a bedroom where you want something with presence. Against plain walls and simple furniture they look terrific.
Colour and abrash
Expect visible bands where dye lots changed. In this tradition abrash is common and is generally read as a mark of genuine village dyeing rather than as a fault. It is often the most beautiful thing about a piece.

Is this Iranian or Caucasian weaving?
The rugs here come from the Iranian province of Azerbaijan in the north west of Iran. The designs share a great deal with Caucasian weaving because of the proximity, which is part of what makes them distinctive.
Why are the spellings inconsistent?
Transliteration varies across the trade. Azerbaijan, Azarbaijan and Azarbayjan all refer to the same region and tradition.
Placing a high contrast rug
Strong drawing needs a quiet setting. These carpets look their best against plain walls and simple upholstery, where the geometry becomes the thing you notice. If the room already has a lot going on, either choose a piece with a softer ground or place the rug where it is seen on its own, such as an entryway or beside a bed.
Care
Hand spun wool and firm village construction make these durable and undemanding. Use an underlay, vacuum without a beater bar, rotate the rug annually and blot spills. Abrash in the ground is characteristic of the tradition and is not something to try to correct.
What to check before you buy
Look at how confidently the medallions and borders are drawn, and check the ends and selvedges. Each rug here has been washed and inspected before listing.
