Azerbaijan Rugs
Azerbaijan, Persia’s mountainous northwest, is a whole world of geometric weaving, the country around Tabriz, Heriz and Ardabil. Rugs from here favor bold medallions, angular motifs and strong color, most often on a deep red field. Each piece we list is a vintage rug from the region, one of a kind and professionally cleaned before it reaches you.
Azerbaijan: bold tribal drawing from northwest Persia
The Persian province of Azerbaijan, in the far northwest, produces some of the most graphically confident weaving in the country. Sitting between the Persian and Caucasian traditions, the rugs take from both: strong geometric medallions, latch-hook borders, and color used at full saturation.
These are village and tribal weavings in hand-spun wool, made to be used, and they have the directness that comes with weaving from memory.
Recognizing Azerbaijan weaving
- Drawing: bold geometric medallions, stepped and hooked forms, strong borders.
- Color: deep madder, indigo, ivory and gold in high contrast.
- Wool: hand-spun with good luster; often visible abrash.
- Sizes: mostly runners, with some small mats.
Rooms that can take a strong floor
These are character rugs. They suit a space that can carry a bold pattern: a hallway, a study, the floor beside the bed in a bedroom where you want something with presence. Against plain walls and simple furniture they look terrific.
Abrash in Azerbaijan rugs
Expect visible bands where dye lots changed. In this tradition abrash is common and is generally taken as a mark of village dyeing rather than as a fault. It is often the most beautiful thing about a piece.
Questions about Azerbaijan rugs
Is this Persian or Caucasian weaving?
The rugs here come from the Persian province of Azerbaijan in northwest Persia. The designs share a great deal with Caucasian weaving because of the proximity, which is part of what makes them distinctive.
Why are the spellings inconsistent?
Transliteration varies across the trade. Azerbaijan, Azarbaijan and Azarbayjan all refer to the same region and tradition.
Placing a high-contrast rug
Strong drawing needs a calm setting. These carpets look their best against plain walls and simple upholstery, where the geometry becomes the thing you notice. If the room already has a lot going on, either choose a piece with a softer field or place the rug where it is seen on its own, such as an entryway or beside a bed.
Keeping an Azerbaijan runner in shape
Hand-spun wool and firm village construction make these durable and undemanding. Put a rug pad underneath, vacuum without a beater bar, turn the rug once a year and blot spills. Abrash in the field belongs to the tradition and is not something to try to correct.
What the photographs tell you
Look at how confidently the medallions and borders are drawn, and check the ends and selvages. Each Azerbaijan rug here was washed and inspected before we listed it.
